Role: Joint Head of Legal services for Humberside Police and South Yorkshire PoliceDepartment: Legal (LSU)Scale: MP1+Salary: £92,892 – £96,468 Plus Car and Market Weighting Supplement.Location: TBCHours: 37 Hours per week (Full-time)Contract: PermanentHumberside Police are looking for a highly experienced, skilled legal professional to steer the collaborative legal services department at Humberside and South Yorkshire police.As the Joint Head of Legal Services, you will take a lead role in advising the chief constables and wider chief officer group of both forces on legal matters that impact on Humberside and South Yorkshire police. You will be a key member of the senior leadership team across both forces and will be responsible for providing legal representation to the chief officer group from both forces in legal proceedings.To be considered for this role, you must have up to date knowledge of legislation, particularly around the area of policing, and have the confidence and capability to recommend appropriate courses of action and maintain all aspects of care and conduct around each case. You must also have the ability to lead and mentor our talented solicitors and non-legal staff with your experience and knowledge.The role will require the successful candidate to travel between Hull & Carbrook, therefore, a full UK driving license is required. Both locations have free secure parking onsite.Key Responsibilities:

  • To manage the Joint Legal Services Unit including the management of performance, workloads, and training.
  • The overall provision of legal representation to the chief constables in all legal proceedings in which either Force has an interest, assesses the strengths of the Force’s position, recommends and develops an appropriate course of action and maintains care and conduct of the case.
  • Ensure that each Force has a Risk Register which contains those cases of high risk to the particular Force for reasons such as reputational damage, high value or complexity. Further, to ensure that all cases on the Risk Registers, across all disciplines, are effectively managed with strategic and practical advice given and that where appropriate awareness is raise throughout the respective Forces of good and poor practice and the impact of civil claims upon the Force resources and morale.
  • The overall provision of accurate legal advice to the chief constables and their officers.
  • To manage and provide a proactive legal service that anticipates implications for the Forces of changes in legislation and case law, identifying the need for new policies and procedures and generating timely and appropriate advice and guidance.

  • Solicitor/Barrister/Legal Executive (Fellow) with a minimum of ten years relevant post qualification experience.
  • Significant management experience including experience of direct supervision, development, training, and promotion of wellbeing.
  • Experience of taking the lead on high profile, sensitive and complex matters.
  • Experience of managing budgets.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proven track record of advising and influencing the senior client.
  • Ability to manage a diverse caseload which is high risk and complex, providing clear and logically sound advice.
  • Ability to work in a highly pressurised environment balancing competing demands and able to offer flexibility and accurate advice within tight time constraints.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be assertive and remain polite and calm in difficult situations.
  • Holds a full UK driving Licence.
  • Must be flexible and able to travel as required across both Force areas.
