Offer DescriptionInstitution strategyMedicine is undergoing a digital shift and is looking for solutions to improve medical efficiency and manage the demographic crisis. Assisted work and the implementation of telemedicine are the approaches being explored, which are clearly opening the way to the integration of artificial intelligence in its various aspects.Through the work of its research laboratories, the University of Western Brittany is a pioneer and expert in the field of AI for automated image content analysis to aid diagnosis and screening. The VISION team has developed solutions for ophthalmology that have been validated and transferred to industry. Initially applied to the retina and focusing on images (fundus photography, OCT), the prospects are to extend to other types of imaging and ocular structures, and to introduce multimodal analysis by adding semantic data management. Application of the software developed to other signals, such as video or voice, will extend the projects to other medical specialties. To maintain the momentum of scientific progress, it is vital to strengthen our research resources.Strategy of host laboratoryThe LaTIM (Laboratoire de Traitement de l’Information Médicale) is a multi-disciplinary research unit led by members of the University of Western Brittany, IMT Atlantique, INSERM and CHRU de Brest. Information is at the heart of the unit’s research project; being by nature multimodal, complex, heterogeneous, shared and distributed, it is integrated by researchers into methodological solutions with the sole aim of improving actual medical benefit.One of the applications developed at the LaTIM concerns the analysis of ophthalmological images and videos for screening and diagnostic purposes. This line of work has led to numerous academic successes (publications, communications), the organization of international competitions, patent registrations, participation in calls for projects (RHU, LabCom, H2020 IMI2, Plan France Relance, etc.) and strong industrial partnerships (regular technology transfers, Cifre theses, etc.). The junior professor will be part of this dynamic, reinforcing it and tackling new themes.Summary of the scientific projectThis project is part of the Analysis axis of LaTIM’s Vision team, which develops AI tools primarily for ophthalmology. This discipline, largely based on images, is the focus of very active research. Today, the first applications based on an AI are validated by public authorities and commercialized. For example, via OphtAI, the LaTIM is now marketing a screening solution for diabetic retinopathy and other ocular pathologies. Current algorithms developed within the team are all based on deep learning for image and video processing. The axes to be developed will focus on the fusion of multimodal information (2D images, 3D images, text, contextual information, etc.) as well as self-supervised learning and foundation models. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with the team already in place, including permanent staff, post-docs, PhD students and trainees, whether clinicians or data scientists. The junior professor will need to be able to make proposals and publish his or her research, as well as listen to our clinical and industrial partners.Summary of the teaching projectThe junior professor will provide training for research Master’s students, as well as for medical students, to introduce these two groups to artificial intelligence techniques and raise their awareness of the issues involved. He or she will also teach in the SIBM Master’s program (Signals and Images in Biology and Medicine), aimed at these two groups. At the same time, he or she will be taking part in the License and Master’s courses offered by the Computer Science Department and may also be involved in the M1 and M2 courses in Fundamental Physics and Applications (including courses on the various aspects of medical image classification using machine learning).Financing :The junior professor will benefit from a €200k grant from the ANR to carry out the scientific project (recruit PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, etc.) as well as €50k for operating expenses.Scientific disseminationThe LaTIM’s policy is to publish in the best journals and conferences in our discipline.Junior Professors are expected to publish regularly, both as principal authors and co-authors. Target journals are Medical Image Analysis or IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging.Open scienceGiven the industrial potential of this work, major innovations will systematically combine patent registration and open access scientific publications. As for the data collected and prepared for research, it will be made available to the community as soon as possible, after a possible embargo period, and in accordance with current regulations.All published articles will be posted on HAL in their full version.The junior professor will participate in the creation of challenges in the field.Science and societyEvery year, the LaTIM takes part in the Fête de la Science and the Nuit des Chercheurs. The junior professor can easily communicate with the public. Depending on their current situation, they may also be interviewed by journalists from the mainstream or popular science press.IndicateursThe junior professor will take part in biweekly meetings of the VISION team’s Analysis axis, which will provide an opportunity to regularly monitor the project’s progress. Dedicated bi-annual meetings will be organized with VISION team and laboratory management.Indicators:– Supervisory activity: 5 supervised theses defended or in progress.– Scientific production:

Recruitment is based on a research and teaching project led by a holder of a doctorate or equivalent diploma. Each laureate will sign a research and teaching agreement with the institution as well as a pre-tenure contract, the duration of which may not be less than three years and may not exceed six years. Funding for the CPJ will be provided by the ANR (National Research Agency) to the tune of 200K euros for each establishment benefiting from a chair, which can be supplemented by additional funding (Region, etc.). This must make it possible, in particular, to take charge of the financing of doctoral students, post docs, IT contractors, as well as to contribute to the operation of the project (purchase of equipment, missions and travel) The remuneration of the winner is freely fixed by the establishment on the basis of a minimum gross annual remuneration of 41,331 euros (IM 735).
