Change your career, change lives.

The Open University is the UK’s largest university, a world leader in flexible part-time education combining a mission to widen access to higher education with research excellence, transforming lives through education.

The Open University has an opportunity for you to ‘fast track’ your career in industry by managing a project to develop a new, innovative Right Size Design Service (RSDS) to reduce the oversizing of building services systems in complex buildings such as NHS hospitals, universities, and schools. Through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), you will be working in collaboration with Low Carbon Europe Ltd. an award-winning building services consultancy who provide building engineering and sustainability services to public sector and blue-chip commercial companies, and the School of Engineering and Innovation in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the Open University.

The role

Your role will be to lead and manage this strategic project, helping Low Carbon Europe Ltd. acquire the knowledge and capabilities to develop and implement the RSDS which will enable LCE’s building operators and customers to understand and gather evidence and the right data to address the problem of oversizing and overdesign in their organisations, saving them money on energy costs and reducing CO2 emissions.

To ensure you feel connected you will be invited to join the OU’s large network of full-time and part time PhD and post docs as well as taking part in KTP Associate training activities.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to accelerate career progression with great training opportunities and valuable commercial experience.

Skills and experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in: Building Services, Renewable Technologies, Mechanical Engineering or Environmental Engineering
  • An understanding of building services and energy use in buildings
  • Diplomatic skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with different stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to express views and ideas both verbally and in writing.
  • Good level of numeracy, attention to detail and analytical approach to problem solving

More information can be provided in the Job description and terms and conditions

If you would like to discuss the vacancy before making an application, please contact Claudia Eckert at [email protected] VRF 21236

What you get in return

We have a strong commitment to providing training and development in and beyond your current role. This includes thorough induction into the organisation and regular reviews of your training and development needs.

In addition, as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate, you will be entitled to:

  • Spend 10% of your time on Personal Development, making full use of a £5,000 PD budget.
  • Access to two residential training sessions aimed at developing project management skills, leading to the opportunity to study free of charge for a CMI (level 5)  qualification in Leadership and Management
  • Opportunity to gain both commercial and academic experience.
  • Potential to fast-track your career in industry.
  • Expand your academic and professional networks through the OU’s PhD and postdoc network and the KTP Associate community.
  • Access to a wealth of academic resources including working with academics from the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) at The Open university, and access to a wide range of personal development and training resources.
  • Use of a dedicated Travel & Subsistence and Consumables budget
  • Access to personal mentoring sessions from an Innovate UK Adviser

Please note, as this is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership post, the successful candidate will be subject to Low Carbon Europe Ltd.’s annual leave entitlement and working hours policy and not those of the Open University. More information is available in the KTP Associate Terms & Conditions.

Assessment

Candidates will be asked to prepare and present a short presentation as part of the interview process. The interviews will be held face-to-face at Low Carbon Europe Ltd.’s offices in Brighton on 29th November 2023.
