Job title:
MSCA – Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF) on Political Philosophy/Political Theory on Kant’s Cosmopolitan Institutionalism
Company:
Job description
The Department of Political Science, University of Pisa, invites applications for a Postdoctoral position in Political Philosophy and Theory on Kant’s Cosmopolitan Institutionalism, starting in September 2024. Since the times of its foundation, the DPS has a strong record in research on political philosophy, with particular focus on Kant’s cosmopolitanism. The research will include the study of Kantian political thought referring its historical-theoretical background as well as its impact on present normative and political debate. The position is part of the project “Kantian Institutionalism” (directed by prof. Nico De Federicis). In this project we will explore how Kant’s political perspective emerges as theory which defends domestic as well as cosmopolitan republicanism in theorizing international sphere. Whereas mainstream literature defends the interpretation of Kant’s federalism as a theory of confederal league, the project will explore its emergence through a genuine cosmopolitan vision, highly emphasized in the latest years of the philosopher’s life. This perspective on federalism presupposes the idea of a ‘world republic’ which Kant outlined between 1793 and 1797; this idea remains as fundamental to drive towards the realization of supranational and transnational normative standards in terms of cosmopolitan right. A second area of the project aims to design innovative theoretical profiles in order to reformulate Kant’s original project for perpetual peace, developing theoretical application for both large and strict meaning of cosmopolitan right, i.e. a possible theory of supranational institutionalism and a theory of a free right to visit and circulation. Methodologically, the project mainly relies on texts investigation; indeed, the analytical knowledge of the Kantian writings will be a fundamental part of the research work. The postdoc will be expected to actively participating in the intellectual community of the University of Pisa and support the teaching activity of at least one course each year at Department of Political Science. The postdoc will also be expected to regularly attend some of the talks, panels, and conferences sponsored by the Chair of political philosophy and political theory. The Department will encourage strengths for placing our Postdoctoral Researchers in excellent tenure-track academic jobs.Eligibility criteriaApplicants must have a PhD degree at the time of the deadline for applications (10th September 2025).
