Job description

The research area is stochastic fluid dynamics. Possible topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Stochastic models of passive scalars: Analysis of anomalous regularization, anomalous dissipation, and intermittency of passive scalars advected by prescribed random velocity fields, either white in time (e.g., the Kraichnan model) or time-correlated.
  • Vortex dynamics for 2D Euler equations: Formulation and investigation of vortex dynamics in domains with boundaries.
  • Regularization by noise: Improved well-posedness results for fluid dynamics PDEs through the addition of suitable stochastic perturbations.
  • Fluid dynamics from a geometric perspective: Analysis of stochastic PDEs in fluid dynamics as stochastic ODEs on infinite-dimensional manifolds, following the Arnold-Ebin-Marsden framework.

A background in partial differential equations related to fluid dynamics and a basic understanding of stochastic analysis would be beneficial. The research will be conducted within the Probability and Mathematical Statistics group at the Department of Mathematics, University of Pisa. The main research areas of the group are: stochastic evolutions (e.g. stochastic partial differential equations, regularization by noise, stochastic fluid dynamics), probabilistic methods in machine learning (e.g. learning dynamics for neural networks), variational problems in commutative and non-commutative setting (e.g. quantum probability, random optimal transport, Malliavin calculus).Mario Maurelli will serve as the project supervisor.Eligibility criteriaApplicants must have a PhD degree at the time of the deadline for applications (10th September 2025). Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will also be considered eligible to apply. At the call deadline, the applicant must have a maximum of 8 years experience in research, from the date of the award of their PhD degree. Years of experience outside research and career breaks will not count towards the above maximum, nor will years of experience in research in third countries, for nationals or long-term residents of EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries who wish to reintegrate to Europe.Mobility Rule: The applicant may be of any nationality (European Fellowships) or nationals or long-term residents of EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries (Global Fellowships) but must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy (for European Fellowships) or the host organisation for the outgoing phase (in case of Global Fellowship) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before 10th September 2025.Application procedureExpressions of interest must be sent by email to no later than May 18, 2025 and must consist of two pdf files: * Complete and updated CV, clearly demonstrating all 3 eligibility requirements.

  • Research statement, maximum 3 pages.
