NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Genetic Epidemiology, Medical Microbiology and/or Infectious Diseases

The NIHR have awarded funding to the University of Bristol and the Severn Deanery to support an NIHR Clinical Lecturer (CL) post in the theme of Platform Science and Bioinformatics in the GMC specialty of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

The role combined clinical and research training in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

This programme will provide up to four years post-doctoral training for an infection trainee  (either ID/MM or ID/GIM) seeking to consolidate their academic career and on trajectory toward an independent researcher. The length of the lectureship will depend on previous clinical training but will be for 4 years full time equivalent maximum or until CCT, whichever occurs first. The appointee will be expected to complete a CCT in ID/MM or ID/GIM. The post is available either full time or part time, for part time posts, the maximum duration of the post is up to 4 years full time equivalent taken over a maximum duration of 6 years.

The successful applicant will split their time 50:50 between clinical training at North Bristol NHS Trust, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (or other appropriate site) and academic work at the University of Bristol, appointed at the appropriate point on the clinical lecturer scale. Within the sessions at the University, the main activity will be research whilst developing educational pedagogy and experience. Time will be divided into blocks of clinical or research work as most appropriate for the research the appointee plans to pursue. The post holder will be employed by the University of Bristol, with an honorary clinical contract with both North Bristol NHS Trust, and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust

The post-holder will combine clinical training in infectious disease and medical microbiology and academic training within Bristol Medical School. Key clinical roles will include

• Microbiology clinical service at North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust
• Ward and clinic infectious disease clinical service at North Bristol NHS Trust

Key academic roles will include

• Developing an independent career in genetic epidemiology, ideally with a focus on infection
• Supervising and mentoring academic and clinical trainees
• Developing proposals for e.g. NIHR Advanced Fellowships; Wellcome Early Career Awards, MRC Clinician Scientists

The successful applicant with combine completing their clinical training in either infectious diseases and medical microbiology (ID/MM), medical microbiology alone (MM), or infectious diseases and general internal medicine (ID/GIM), working towards CCT (50%), with academic training in the above specialities, working towards developing their own programme of research and applying for Advanced Fellowships (50%).

The post is for a maximum of four years, or until CCT is reached.

Contract type: Annually renewable fixed term basis for a period of up to 4 years FTE or until CCT, whichever occurs first. For less than full time training, up to 4 years full time equivalent can be taken over a maximum duration of 6 years.

Work pattern: Full time/1.0 FTE (part time considered, minimum 60%)

Grade: Clinical

Salary: We will mirror the successful applicant’s NHS pay and progression including transitional pay arrangement.
