About the Role

You will be a key member of the Department of Chemistry’s Health and Safety team and will support the Area Safety Officer to have overall accountability for the health and safety elements of the Department of Chemistry. 

You will be a key advice point on health and safety matters and will carry out a portfolio of work including training/inductions, lab inspections, incident investigations and management, compliance and risk assessment and project work.  You will be expected to develop as a subject matter expert on chemical safety, biological safety and radiation safety and will in consultation with the Area Safety Officer contribute to the development of university-wide policy in this area providing support and advising on requirements for legislative compliance.  You will deputise for the Area Safety Officer as required which may include representing the Department within and beyond the University and supervising other Chemistry Health and Safety Team members.

This role is essential for ensuring the ongoing health, safety and welfare of all students, employees and visitors to Chemistry and to other related departments.  You will be supported in training and development necessary to fulfil the requirements of the role 

 About You

You will hold a PhD in Chemistry or a closely related area and have expertise and experience in health and safety within a chemical environment. You will have a strong ability to influence and demonstrate authority in areas of health and safety at all management levels. As well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.   The ability to understand and explain highly complex, sometimes specialist, issues, and ability to resolve through appropriate solutions is also essential.
