We are recruiting for a Research Fellow in Linguistics (fixed term, 0.6FTE, to 30th November 2025) for the UKRI-funded Digital Empowerment in Language Teaching (DELTEA) project at the University of Southampton, Languages, Cultures and Linguistics in collaboration with the Institute of Education, University of Reading (Professor Suzanne Graham).

DELTEA is led by Dr Alison Porter and comprises three work packages which explore teacher professional development in using digital tools in their language’s classrooms and children’s linguistic and non-linguistic progression during the course of a teaching intervention.  In the third work package (2024-25) we will scale up our professional development activities and engage with wider education stakeholders to promote understanding of teacher learning and the potential benefits of a foreign language education.  The DELTEA team of researchers, external contractors and teachers is developing and trialling innovative, digital tools to support children’s learning:  a phonics app which uses artificial intelligence to give real-time pronunciation feedback and multimodal stories which aim to foster creativity and empathy.

This post will involve the development of teacher education materials for use during the project, data collection in participant schools and data analysis. The successful candidate will also contribute the design of data collection tools for the third phase of the project. They will also design, promote, and participate in a wide range of stakeholder engagement events.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

An Enhanced DBS check may be required for this role.
