The innovative Postgraduate Taught (PGT) programmes at WOPEC in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University incorporate both distance learning and contact teaching. We are seeking to appoint a part time PGT Teacher to join our motivated postgraduate teaching team. The successful applicant will undertake teaching and assessment in-person within the School with some occasional online provision also.  

This post is for half a day a week on Monday afternoons. To join the teaching team in our weekly full time MSc Clinical Optometry clinic session at Cardiff University and to help with other teaching assessment activities across our portfolio of postgraduate modules. 

You will be assigned an academic line manager, and the support of a mentor is available.

This is a part time position 0.11 FTE (4 hours per week) and is fixed term for a period of 3 years. 

Salary: £39,347 – £44,263 per annum, plus market supplement, pro rata for hours worked (Grade 6).

Job Description

Main function

PGT Teachers undertake a full teaching and assessment load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules/programmes within the postgraduate provision of the School.  They supervise students in clinics and carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. They also pursue excellence in teaching and are expected to inspire others to do the same. The main duties and responsibilities include the following:
Key duties

  • Independently contribute to module delivery and curriculum development at postgraduate levels, including in-person and online courses, inspiring students.
  • Design teaching programmes for courses. Includes identifying learning objectives and selecting appropriate curricula; selecting teaching methods, resources and reading; determining, designing and producing study material; planning course delivery and planning for contingencies such as slower/faster progress than anticipated.
  • Supervise the work of students including in clinics, placements and the supervision of Master’s students.
  • Deliver teaching courses including in-person and online distance learning. Includes preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student interventions; responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery.
  • Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust.
  • Carry out a significant administrative role within the department or undertake another significant activity to contribute to the overall management of the department, as required.
  • Co-ordinate team teaching, including liaison with other teachers about curriculum changes.
  • Carry out assessment for courses. Includes designing assessment instruments and criteria; marking assessments, ensuring adequate moderation; providing written/oral feedback; judging whether student circumstances should be taken into consideration in the assessment; and collating and providing final assessments of students.
  • Carry out course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; and implementing ideas for improving own performance

General and Other Duties

  • Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile
  • Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
  • Abide by all University policies.
  • Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

Essential Criteria 

  • General Optical Council registration and uphold membership of an NHS Health Board (or equivalent) to practice as an Optometrist/Ophthalmologist in the Cardiff University, and/or any associated, patient-facing clinics.
  • Higher Professional Qualification(s) e.g. Prof Cert Med Ret, Prof Cert Glaucoma, Prof Cert Low Vision, Prof Cert Paediatrics etc.
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
  • Effective teaching skills with the ability to deliver high-quality lectures and tutorials, facilitate peer discussions and develop own teaching materials and methods and meet defined learning objectives.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media.
  • Advanced optometric clinical experience in the field appropriate to the course you will teach on.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to make appropriate decisions on academic content of courses.
  • Ability to work using own initiative, without close supervision, to plan and priorities own daily work and plan forward.
  • Ability to act as teaching co-ordinator, to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
  • IT competent- Minimum of PowerPoint, Microsoft Word and the internet.
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Postgraduate higher qualification (e.g. MSc) or PhD in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience.
  • Relevant professional/teaching and learning qualification e.g., Advance HE Fellowship status or postgraduate teaching qualification.
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
