OrganisationJob descriptionYou will work within the Department of Operations in the field of Operations Research on the topic of multistage stochastic optimization problems with integer decision variables. The goal of the PhD project is to develop and implement new exact and approximate solution methods for these highly relevant but challenging problems. In addition, performance guarantees for these new solution methods will be derived.This position is part of a larger research project “Discrete Decision Making under Uncertainty”, in which researchers work on developing new theory, algorithms, and case studies for discrete decision-making problems under uncertainty. For example, the newly developed algorithms will be applied to real-life cases such as designing a sustainable hydrogen supply chain for the Northern Netherlands and asset liability management for pension funds.About the University of Groningen

  • A master’s degree in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics or related fields.
  • A background in the Mathematics of Operations Research.
  • English writing and presentation skills.

Conditions of employmentThe full-time appointment is temporary for a period of in principle four years, under the condition of a positive assessment at the end of the first year. The gross monthly starting salary is € 2,901 which increases yearly to a maximum of € 3,707. Based on the gross salary you will receive an additional 8% holiday allowance each year in May, and an additional 8.3 % end of year bonus in December.
