Insight researches next-generation data analytics technologies in several key application domains, including Health and Human Performance, Smart Communities, the Internet of Things, Enterprise and Services, Sustainability, and Operations. Insight at the University of Galway offers a stimulating, dynamic, and multicultural research team with members from all over the world, fostering a global community, excellent connections to research groups worldwide, and close collaboration with industrial partners.The Data Spaces group researches techniques for intelligent information systems, including large-scale decentralised architectures, data semantics (representation, storage, and interoperability), and dynamic data (events and streams). We are currently looking for PhD students to investigate neuro-symbolic techniques in these areas. The PhD studentships will explore fundamental research on the design of neuro-symbolic, agentic artificial intelligence with applications in large-scale, data-rich deployments, such as data spaces.Living allowance (Stipend): €25,000,. per annum, [tax-exempt scholarship award]University fees: Funding is in place for 4 years of fees.Start date: September 2025Academic Entry Requirements:

  • Have at least a 2.1 (Hons) degree and/or a Master’s in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of several of the following areas is desirable: knowledge graphs, linked data/RDF, machine/deep learning and AI, agentic frameworks, distributed database systems, event and stream data management.
  • Strong programming skills (i.e. C/C++, Java, Python)
  • Possesses strong oral, written, and analytical skills.
  • Effective, highly motivated team player with the ability to work independently.
  • Non-native English speakers require an IELTS(6.5)/TOEFL (88).
