Job description

Offer DescriptionApplications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.Replacing synchronous machines by non-rotational sources has dramatic consequences on the dynamic response of the grid. Power electronics converters introduce faster dynamics than conventional controllers for both active and reactive power support. This creates unexpected couplings and control approaches based on time-scale separations may become less reliable and increasingly less valid. Likewise, system control tasks predominantly provided by synchronous generators (such as voltage support and oscillation damping) have to be increasingly shouldered by nonsynchronous devices. This FRESLIPS project is about the definition of feasible and practical solutions for the frequency control and stability analysis of power systems with high penetration of renewable energy sources and low inertia. These solutions are based on a novel theoretical approach recently developed by the Principal Investigator that is aimed at defining the fundamental relationship between power and frequency variations in AC systems. The proposed theory addresses several important challenges of modern power systems. It exploits the heterogeneous variety and high granularity of distributed, renewable energy resources based on power electronics, the ubiquity of broadband communication networks and the unprecedented availability of large amounts of measurement data that characterise the smart grid. The expected results of the project are a set of practical solutions that practitioners can implement in the field. The proposed theory is thus a timely and useful tool to foster the development of flexible, efficient, secure and sustainable power systems and smart grids. This is an advanced research focused role, building on your prior experience as a post-doctoral fellow, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator. The primary purpose of the role is to develop new or advanced research skills and competences, on the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications and scholarly dissemination, the development of funding proposals, and the supervision and mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.Salary Range: €43,908 – €50,302 Per AnnumAppointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experienceClosing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on the 16th of May 2024Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified.
