Job description

Offer DescriptionPOSITION: 12 months (CIRIMAT) opening in July 1st, 2024 (Expecting start)SALARY: Postdoctoral / Research engineer position, Gross monthly salary: 2950 € euros (estimated)LOCATION: Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, CIRIMAT, Toulouse, FranceDEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: April 30th, 2024PROJECT TITLE: 3D printed / additive manufacturing biomaterials: Biomedical Innovation for Facial Bone reconstruction in oncologyFUNDING:French Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) and France 2030 : call RHU : BIOFACE Project :PROJECT DESCRIPTION (BIOFACE abstract): The BIOFACE project, led by Professor Dupret-Bories (Toulouse University Hospital), is one of 16 national winners of the 6th call for university hospital health research projects (RHU6). This €13m project has been awarded over €4.3m. The 5-year project covers everything from in silico research to clinical trials. Seven partners are involved in the project, including academic partners (CIRIMAT, Inserm Unit 1121), industrial partners (CERHUM, Materialise, Spartha Medical, OCR) and hospital partners (Toulouse University Hospital). Background: Surgery is the optimal treatment for Head and Neck cancers (HCC) and frequently requires removal of a facial bone. To limit aesthetic and functional after-effects, a bone reconstruction is performed in the same operation. The current standard use of autologous bone taken from a donor site (e.g., fibula or scapula) and revascularized by microsurgery is unsatisfactory (surgeries are long, morbid, with complications, aesthetic and motricity sequelae, and significant risks of failure (around 10%). These major surgeries are not accessible to all patients. Objectives and means: The BIOFACE project aims to develop an innovative solution based on preliminary data established by the partners to solve a clinical problem for which current solutions are suboptimal: immediate and customized one-stage bone reconstruction for HCC, while limiting morbidity. The complementary assets and competencies of each partner will allow to go from in vitro to clinical practice in 60 months. Success of BIOFACE will allow between 1.300 and 2.000 patients per year in France to avoid risk of severe aesthetic and morbid sequelae. It will also extend the scope of eligible patients. The objective of BIOFACE is to transform the surgical procedure for facial bone reconstruction and dramatically improve patients’ quality of life through:– The development of an innovative 3D printing CERHUM implant technology based on hydroxyapatite integrated with the 3D printing MATERIALISE titanium technology to obtain the design and mechanical properties necessary for jaw and maxillary reconstructions.– The development of an innovative association between a new antibacterial spray targeted at bacteria known in HCC and a healing membrane for the interface between the biomaterial (Hydroxyapatite and Titanium) and the surrounding tissues.– The validation of the bio-integration capacities despite external radiotherapy (pre-clinical and clinical trials).– The validation of the positive medico-economic impact of the BIOFACE operating procedure based on these innovative medical devices (MD).BIOFACE will also transform pre-clinical trials, using a novel “One Health approach”.Impact: BIOFACE will improve patients’ quality of life and avoid severe aesthetic and morbid sequalae. The project will reduce these costly sequalae and risk failure.By providing pioneering research programs based on One Health/One Medicine approachesKeywords: Maxillofacial reconstruction; 3D printing; biomaterial; oncology; head cancer; synthetic bone graft; hydroxyapatite, titanium implant; biocompatibility; custom-made; healing; Calcium Phosphate, additive manufacturing, porosity, functionalization, surface treatmentThe recruited Postdoc fellow / Research engineer will work on two main axes:He/she will perform microstructural, physico-chemical, surface characterizations and mechanical analysis of printed / functionalized scaffolds, in order to enhance final properties of the scaffolds (surface properties, porosity size and orientation, mechanical properties, phase qualification…). With this aim, he/she will work with academic material scientist and other consortium partner who will provide Printed scaffold.Theses experimental work will be carried out at CIRIMAT laboratory where the Postdoc fellow / Research engineer will be hosted by the PPB group, (Phosphates, Pharmacotechnics, Biomaterials).
