Offer Description

Job Summary :

A postdoctoral position in organic synthesis and enantioselective catalysis is available for 12 months (with potential extension) at the “Laboratoire d’Innovation Moléculaire et Applications” (LIMA – UMR CNRS 7042) at the Université de Strasbourg, with funding from the Fondation Jean-Marie Lehn’s Innovation call. Starting date should be during the first semester of 2024. The research activities will be carried out within the “Catalyse Organique” (CatOrg) research group, under the supervision of Prof. Xavier Bugaut.

Keys words: atropisomerism, enantioselective catalysis, halogen bonding, non-covalent interactions, organic synthesis.

Job Description :

Research project: The project deals with the preparation and study of new chiral organocatalysts. Enantioselective organocatalysis consists in the use of organic molecules of low molecular weights able to accelerate a chemical transformation while controlling the preferential formation of one enantiomer over the other. Because of their easy access and low toxicity, organocatalysts exhibit a good eco-compatibility, which is interesting in the context of preparing bioactive molecules.

The target catalysts are haloazolium salts that act as halogen bond donors. Halogen bonding is a Lewis acid-base non-covalent interaction that has become more and more frequently used in chemistry, especially in catalysis.[1,2]

The post-doctoral research associate’s work will be devoted to the design of efficient synthetic routes towards enantioenriched atropisomeric[3,4] haloazolium salts and the evaluation of their activities and selectivities in different organocatalyzed reactions, but also the in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanisms using different analytical methods.

Work environment:

-The position is open at the “Université de Strasbourg” on Cronenbourg Campus, in the “Laboratoire d’Innovation Moléculaire et Applications” (LIMA – UMR CNRS 7042), within the research group “Catalyse Organique” (CatOrg, https://lima.unistra.fr/recherche/catalyse-organique-catorg ). At the beginning of 2024, the research team will be composed of 2 permanent researchers and 5 non-permanent staff (post-doctoral research associates, PhD students, Master trainees).

-The post-doctoral research assocaite will have an access to all research means of the institute, but also to shared analytical technical support of the University. All the communication within the research group and the institute (including seminars) is done in English.

-The post-doctoral research associate will be supervised by Prof. Xavier Bugaut, Full Professor at the “Université de Strasbourg” and team leader of the CatOrg research group.

– Fully-funded research stays in our collaborator’s laboratories in Marseille (France) and Münster (Germany) are envisaged.

Salary: minimum 2271 €/month of gross salary (1787 €/month of net salary), depending on the previous post-doctoral experience of the selected candidate.

Applications by e-mail should include:

  • a CV with a list of publications and communications;
  • a motivation letter;
  • the contact of at least two referees.

Skills/Qualifications

A solid training in organic synthesis is absolutely required for this project, especially abilities to perform reactions under inert conditions and to purify organic compounds using standard techniques (chromatography, recrystallization, distillation), and a good knowledge in structural determination (1 H, 13 C and 2D NMR).

Previous experience in the determination of thermodynamic parameters of association and/or enantioselective catalysis would be appreciated.

We will look for a rigorous, motivated and enthusiastic candidate, with good communication skills and willingness to work in close interaction with their colleagues in an international research group. An experience abroad (traineeship, PhD or post-doc) would be a plus.
