Post-Doctoral Researcher in Economics (Fixed term 12 months)

Salary: £32,982 to £37,099 per annum together with USS benefits
Location: Based at Singleton Campus

The post is based within the Department of Economics which is situated in the newly established School of Social Sciences which resides on the historic Singleton Park Campus on the seafront within Singleton Park; one of Swansea’s key green spaces which provides acres of lush green parkland.  In addition, the department has close working relationships with constituent departments within the School of Social Sciences, and with the Department of Politics, Philosophy and International Relations (PPIR) across both teaching and research.

We are looking for a fixed term post-doc to assistant and be involved in a project within the WISERD (Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research and Data) research centre, and for which its Swansea co-directors sit within the departments of Economics and PPIR respectively.

The work will centre on innovations in measuring and driving citizens’ engagement with politics, and how this is stratified across minority groups. While not exhaustive, minority groups could be viewed as encompassing those from religious groups, ethnic groups, from sexual minority groups, or having a disability. The envisaged work package will include conceptualising, operationalising, and analysing political engagement, particularly seeking to leverage commonly available survey items. This will be done with a view to analysing public opinion data, in particular with a view to disentangling participation and engagement metrics, but also with a view to generating and implementing high-quality engagement metrics for deployment in fieldwork in order to assess the effectiveness of citizen engagement interventions. Candidates should have significant data analysis and research design skills, as well as familiarity with the study of citizen engagement and participation. Recognising a particular focus of WISERD within Swansea, a special emphasis will also be given to disseminating research methods (both qualitative and quantitative) within the School, Faculty, and beyond into the wider university. A skill-set appropriate to this, and an ability to aid in such dissemination activities, would be a distinct advantage.
