The ARCHIFLAMM project has two main aims: (1) to prepare a digital scientific edition of the correspondence of the astronomer, spiritualist and writer Camille Flammarion (1842-1925) and of parts of his archives; and (2) to use this previously unpublished corpus to explore the sources of the popularity of a scientist on the fringes of official science, from a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective (history of science, cultural and social history, literary studies, anthropology). ARCHIFLAMM will produce and stimulate new work in four interrelated areas of Flammarion’s practice: (a) amateur science and observatory techniques; (b) epistemic and social dimensions of a transnational network; (c) literary techniques in popular scientific writings; (d) spiritualism and research into life after death and extraterrestrial life. The person recruited should be able to develop original research and produce scientific results related to the ARCHIFLAMM project themes.

He/she will be responsible for assisting and making proposals for the modelling and feeding of databases linked to the project (bibliography, biographies, etc.). Finally, he/she will be involved in communicating the issues and results of the project to a variety of audiences (writing articles and blog posts, taking part in outreach and popularisation projects, exhibitions, etc.).This position is to be filled in the History of Mathematical Sciences team of the Institut de mathématiques de Jussieu-Paris rive gauche (IMJ-PRG, UMR 7586, CNRS, Sorbonne université, Université Paris-Cité), in Paris, France, under the supervision of David Aubin and the other members of the ARCHIFLAMM project. A workspace and the necessary computer equipment will be provided.
