Offer Description42 Months, Fixed-Term, Whole-Time PostPosition SummaryThe Cork Centre for Vitamin D and Nutrition Research at the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences, UCC ( ), through its Joint Directors (Professor Kevin Cashman and Professor Mairead Kiely) are coordinating a newly funded European Commission Horizon Europe project on Tackling micronutrient malnutrition and hidden hunger to improve health in the EU [the Zero Hidden Hunger EU project ]. This large-scale, multidisciplinary project, with 19 partners from 10 countries aims to provide estimates of the true prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies, based on priority biomarker and micronutrient intake data in European populations and their associated health costs, focused on high-risk population subgroups, and 2) provide the best possible evidence to develop context-specific, tailored food-focused solutions to ensure adequate supply of vitamins and minerals from diets from sustainable sources. Using high-throughput biomarker and advanced data analytical and modelling techniques, Zero Hidden Hunger EU will deliver credible evidence enabling policymakers and food system actors to deliver food-focused strategies to eradicate micronutrient deficiencies from Europe. The Cork Centre for Vitamin D and Nutrition Research has several Post-Doctoral Researcher positions available within the Zero Hidden Hunger EU project.University College Cork is leading the dietary analysis workpackage, which will provide estimates of micronutrient intakes in Europe, and will also play a key role in the dietary modelling workpackage. We welcome applications from highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates for a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Micronutrient Intakes and Dietary Modelling. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will coordinate and undertake analysis of multiple large-scale national and epidemiological dietary databases, will collaborate with international partners, and will have the opportunity to be at the cutting edge of micronutrient research.The ideal candidate will have/be:

  • A PhD qualification in Human Nutrition.
  • Deep knowledge of food data, including composition, intake and analysis.
  • Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • A highly skilled and adaptable individual with a proven ability to report to stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.

  • To conduct a specified programme of research in the area of micronutrient intakes, status and health under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigators.
  • To coordinate and conduct dietary analysis, including model development and validation, data analysis and report writing.
  • To refine existing data analysis approaches, develop novel methods and provide training to other researchers.
  • Coordination of secure data transfer including permissions and appropriate use from project partners.
  • Data handling, processing, and protection.
  • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigators, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.
  • To gain experience in grant writing.
  • To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigators.
  • To become familiar with the publication process.
  • To acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision).
  • To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the Centre, School or College.
  • To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day to day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
  • To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
  • To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.

Specific Requirements

  • A PhD qualification in Human Nutrition.
  • Appropriate research experience.
  • Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment.
  • Previous experience with dietary data analysis on a large scale, deep knowledge of food data.
  • Expertise in micronutrients, including European and Global regulations.
  • Strong statistical analysis skills in modelling of food and nutrient intake data.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Evidence of excellent project management skills.
  • A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.
  • Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • A commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.
  • Ability to work well within a team.
