Offer DescriptionJoin us for a postdoc positions on the politics of European Union economic governance. You will unravel the major political dynamics shaping Europe’s reform capacities. You will conduct (comparative) case studies on how fiscally conservative (frugal) member states interact with the EU in socio-economic and/or fiscal decision-making.Job description
The Research Group on European and Global Governance at Erasmus University is offering a postdoctoral position to study the politics of reforming European economies. The position is part of the project “Towards a Resilient European Union? Post-pandemic Economic Governance Amidst Politicization”, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO).The project starts from the observation that member state compliance with EU reform recommendations (European Semester) has been limited. It aims to investigate whether linking the European Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF, NextGenerationEU) to compliance has led to greater reform efforts, or whether factors such as Euroscepticism have constrained member state action. In addition, it examines how lessons from the RRF shape positions on new EU spending programmes. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct innovative research through theoretically informed (comparative) case studies on socio-economic and/or fiscal policies. The analysis may include factors such as public opinion, actor preferences and coalitions, politicization strategies, and bargaining dynamics-particularly with regard to fiscally conservative (‘frugal’) member states such as Germany and the Netherlands. Italy and Spain are covered by a PhD researcher who started in early 2023.Research methods may include, but are not limited to, process tracing, document analysis, and interviews with key actors from the EU and its member states. Research visits to Brussels and fieldwork in relevant member states are also envisaged. You will work in close collaboration with Prof. Dr. Markus Haverland and supervise a junior research assistant. You will have the opportunity to present findings at international conferences, resulting in (co-)authored journal articles in international peer-reviewed journals. You will also contribute to activities aimed at increasing the societal impact of the project’s results. The position reserves 10 percent for teaching activities. You will be part of the vibrant, internationally oriented, and caring Research Group on European and Global Governance, which is embedded in the Team Policy, Politics and Society.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsSpecific Requirements
