Job description

Offer DescriptionThe postdoctoral researcher will be part of the nuclear theory team at IJCLab, Orsay.
He will work on the ab-initio description of asymmetric nuclear matter as it exists in neutron-star cores.
The core of neutron stars is thought to consist of homogeneous matter containing neutrons, protons, electrons, and possibly muons. Other degrees of freedom such as hyperons or quarks may play a role in the more central regions of the core where the density is even higher, but the present project will concentrate on purely nucleonic matter. This matter has densities between half and several times nuclear saturation density and is extremely neutron rich, and these conditions cannot be studied in terrestrial experiments. Hence, phenomenological energy density functionals have large uncertainties. The aim of this project is therefore to use an ab-initio approach, i.e., to start from realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. More precisely, the idea is to extend recent [arxiv:2211.01308] and on-going studies on the description of pure neutron matter to higher densities and to the case that also protons are present, which requires to include the three-body force. Besides the equation of state, also the superfluid properties will be studied, which in this regime are probably due to pairing in the triplet channel. The postdoctoral fellow will participate in the formal developments of the theory and in the numerical implementations. The proposed way to attack the problem is to first soften the nuclear interactions by solving the similarity renormalization group (SRG) flow equation for the two- and three-body forces and subsequently use them in the framework of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT). The postdoc will also participate in the writing of publications and present his/her results at conferences and workshops. The Irène Joliot-Curie Laboratory for the Physics of 2 Infinities (IJCLab) is a joint research unit under the auspices of the CNRS, the University of Paris-Saclay and the University of Paris. It comprises around 650 researchers, engineers and technicians and is located on the campus of the University of Paris-Saclay.
Its research themes are nuclear physics, high-energy physics, theoretical physics, astroparticles, astrophysics and cosmology, particle accelerators, energy, the environment and health.
IJCLAB has considerable technical capacity (around 160 engineers and technicians) in all the major fields required to design and implement the experimental equipment necessary for its scientific activity, as well as the design, development and use of instruments (accelerators and detectors). The presence of research facilities and technology platforms on the laboratory site is also a major advantage. The Researcher will work in the Theoretical Nuclear Physics group (around 16 physicists, including PhD students), which is part of the Theoretical Physics cluster. The position is in a sector covered by the protection of scientific and technological potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival be authorised by the competent authority of the MESR.
IJCLAB bases its recruitment policy on the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion. These values are essential to the professional development of our staff, who are key players in our collective success, and to the development of the laboratory itself.RequirementsResearch Field Physics Education Level PhD or equivalentLanguages FRENCH Level BasicResearch Field Physics Years of Research Experience 1 – 4Additional InformationEligibility criteriaThe candidate should have a PhD thesis in theoretical physics in the field of nuclear or neutron-star physics, and he/she needs solid skills in many-body theory, mathematics, and numerical programming.
