Job description

Job Category: VIP BJob Description:Fishing for a job to put your epidemiology skills to use?DTU Aqua is looking for a postdoc within Veterinary Epidemiology to work with different aspects of aquatic animal epidemiology. Your work will primarily be within a research project where the aim is to develop a best practice protocol for virus surveillance on farm level. One aspect of this is the validation of use of eDNA from water samples compared to tissue samples for early detection of disease. Another is to perform “what if” scenario modelling to compare suitability for different sampling protocols in farms in non-endemic and endemic areas. In another project, the aim is to quantify biologic and economic effects of diseases in aquaculture, within the European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare. Here, the focus will be on notifiable infectious diseases and evaluating cost and effect of surveillance and of different control measures as stamping out or vaccination. In the partnership, you will be working together with fish health experts, experts on animal health economics and veterinary epidemiologists from several partner institutes in Denmark and Europe:Other research projects are in the pipeline, where the focus is on modelling of disease transmission. In addition, you will participate in supplying epidemiological advice for competent authorities on design of surveillance and control of infectious diseases in aquaculture and help with design and evaluation of experimental work in the section. You will be situated at the Section for Fish and Shellfish diseases in Kgs. Lyngby near Copenhagen. The section offers state-of-the art laboratory and experimental facilities, where we carry out research on virology, immunology and host-pathogen interactions. We have more than 30 years of experience with research on fish diseases, and a large international network. The section is the National reference laboratory on fish, crustacean and mollusc diseases, and EU reference laboratory on fish- and crustacean diseases. In addition, the section has a large project portfolio and currently employs 35 people with a background in veterinary science, molecular biology, immunology/vaccinology, diagnostics, virology, bacteriology, epidemiology and laboratory techniques.Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be responsible for performing the tasks described in the research project descriptions, including design of study, selecting the best data for execution, performing and reporting analyses. This requires that you are able to work independently and have a desire to seek out and test the most suitable statistical analyses for the tasks.Based on your competence and interests, your tasks will include:

  • Develop and use epidemiological models (for example regression models or SIR-models), including for “what if” scenario modelling
  • Validation of diagnostic tests, by comparing one test to another (water to tissue sampling)
  • If relevant, scenario tree modelling of surveillance programmes
  • Design of databases for laboratory and surveillance data, and development of maps
  • Data procurement and management
  • Design and execute surveys
  • Support on design and statistical analyses of experimental trials performed in the section

You are expected to publish your work in scientific peer-reviewed journals and participate in dissemination at meetings and conferences. We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

  • Creative and interested in exploring new technology and in adopting new ways of working and solving problems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
