Postdoctoral Fellow in Sri Lankan History (Fixed Term)

The UKRI-funded 5-year project, ‘Colombo: Layered Histories in the Global South City’, which was selected for funding by the European Research Council under its ‘HORIZON’ programme, is recruiting to its first postdoctoral fellowship.

This is a full-time post for three years, commencing 1st October 2024. ‘The prospective early career scholar will focus their attention within the broad field of ‘Early modernity in Colombo’, taken here simply as indicating the period prior to 1800

The successful candidate will be educated to PhD level, normally with a PhD in the history of Asia/early modern world history, preferably with established expertise in Southeast Asian/Sri Lankan history. They should be fluent in the use of research materials in Portuguese and/or Dutch and will benefit from having experience working in Sri Lankan archives. Use of research materials in Sinhala and/or Tamil is desirable.

The ability and willingness to work collaboratively and to engage in digital humanities research and public-facing work is essential.  Candidates are expected to demonstrate their ability to publish high quality research.

Given the project’s aim to generate dialogue between Sri Lanka and Europe, candidates applying from Sri Lanka are especially encouraged.
