VHIR offers a vacancy position for a Researcher in the Childhood Cancer & Blood Disorders Group.The Childhood Cancer & Blood Disorders group at VHIR is composed of clinical, translational and basic researchers and has three laboratories (Sarcomas lab, Neural Tumors lab and Rare Anemia Disorders lab) and three research programs (Personalized Medicine, Clinical Trials Unit and Stem Cell & Advanced Therapies in Haematological Malignancies & Cell Therapy).Childhood cancer remains a challenge for our society with an unacceptable number of children dying from disease recurrence or suffering sequelae from intensive therapy. Incorporating high-level Personalised Medicine in standard treatment of childhood cancer offers a unique opportunity to improve survival and reduce morbidities for all children. The main goals of the Personalised Medicine Programme are: 1) to improve outcomes of childhood cancers through the implementation of personalized medicine, based on the improved molecular understanding of tumor biology which guides combination trials against multiple hallmarks of cancer and improve access to targeted therapies at relapse, 2) to facilitate access to novel therapies for children and adolescents with cancer where standard treatment has failed, and 3) to improve diagnostics, prognostic information at diagnosis, and risk stratification, and facilitate genetic counselling and surveillance for familial cancers.The Job Position is to participate in the Personalized Medicine for Cancer in children in Spain and be part of the Personalized Medicine Program’s team.Education and qualifications:Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science (Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Genetics, Medicine, etc..) and Master’s
  • PhD in molecular biology, biomedicine, genetics or similar
  • Good command of Spanish and English

Experience and knowledge:Required:

  • At least five years or more of postdoctoral experience
  • Knowledge of next generation and whole exome sequencing techniques and interpretation of results
  • Ability to coordinate and manage projects (e.g. grant applications, annual reports, partners consortium coordination, etc.)

Desired:

  • Previous experience in cancer genomics and biology of pediatric cancers, particularly clinical and translational research
  • Knowledge and experience in international Precision Oncology Programs, including advanced sequencing techniques such as WGS and RNASeq
  • Experience in preclinical murine studies and generation of preclinical models
  • Knowledge of study databases
  • High motivation for research, research dissemination & patient engagement
  • Experience in leadership roles (e.g. publications as first or last author, direction of master thesis, direction of thesis, etc.)
  • Experience in international collaborations
  • Good communication skills and being a good team player

Main responsibilities and duties:

  • Responsible of the Personalised Medicine genomic hub (WES, RNAseq and WGS for pediatric patients at relapse).
  • Overall project coordination and consortium management.
  • Engagement with project partners, stakeholders in Precision Medicine and patient advocacy groups.
  • Organization of molecular tumor boards.
  • Elaboration of the project database.
  • Provide support on the implementation of Personalised Medicine in the Spanish healthcare system.
  • Prepare presentations of results and communication/dissemination material.
  • Participation in laboratory outreach activities.

Labour conditions:

  • Full-time position 40 h/week
  • Starting date: Immediate
  • Gross annual salary: Remuneration will depend on experience and skills. Salary ranges are consistent with our Collective Agreement pay scale.
  • Contract: Permanent linked to project
