This is an exciting opportunity to contribute significantly to the success of one of UK’s leading Engineering School.We are a world class research-intensive university, delivering teaching and learning of the highest quality and playing a leading role in the economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.The position is based in the School of Engineering within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in:
- Propulsion technologies for next generation aircraft, spacecraft and rockets.
- Aerospace-Specific CFD Applications i.e. advanced turbulence modelling, high-speed and hypersonic flows, flow control.
- Aerostructures and materials, innovative multifunctional structures relevant to aerospace and energy applications.
- Aerospace systems – autonomous operation of spacecraft and constellations, autonomous flight control systems, including AI and machine learning applications for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and autonomous drones.
However, applicants with expertise in all areas relevant to aerospace engineering will be considered.The Professor of Aerospace will leverage the School’s established strengths in computational fluid dynamics, core mechanical engineering, transport engineering, mechanical power transmissions, materials science, mechatronics, robotics, and precision engineering. Additionally, they will utilize expertise in geospatial technologies and electric machines to develop a comprehensive new program in aerospace engineering.This role involves not only building on the existing foundations but also identifying and addressing expertise gaps in the curriculum and research areas. The aim is to create a program that is both cutting-edge and holistic, preparing students for the challenges and opportunities in the aerospace sector. By integrating these diverse but related disciplines, the Professor will ensure the program offers a broad and deep understanding of aerospace engineering, setting a new standard for educational excellence in this field.In the role of Deputy Head of School, which holds a tenure of 3 years initially, you will be a key leader, both within the School and Faculty.
