The Role

 

Oxfam in Malawi is looking for a result oriented individual to fill out a position Temporary Public Health Promoter Officer.  Oxfam has secured new funding from UNICEF to respond to cholera outbreak emergency in Chikwawa and Nsanje Districts, which have been experiencing surge of new cholera cases recently. The outbreak was initially confirmed in March 2022 in Machinga District, and it had spread across all the districts in the country affecting over 58,000 people and claimed over 1,700 people since the onset of the outbreak in March 2022. The project planned to block the spread by implementing WASH interventions in the affected TAs of Chikwawa and Nsanje, using Community Led Sanitation (CLTS) approach which can quickly enhance latrine coverage and improve WASH/ hygiene behaviours. The project is designed to run for four months from 15th Sep 2023 to 15th Jan 2024. Being an emergency rapid response, it requires swift implementation of the lifesaving interventions.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • With supervision, collect and record basic needs assessment data from communities.
  • Lead and support implementation of CLTS on the ground
  • Facilitate, document and report FGDs (Focus group discussions)
  • Discuss and orientate community action plans to design a WASH programme.
  • Communicate well in the local language.
  • Provide information for inclusion in reports.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of PHP activities.
  • Collaborate with PHEs in latrine designs/ water point location and any technical challenges for maintenance and community preferences.
  • Developing work plans with PHP team

 

 

Applicants should at least have a minimum of:

Education:

  • . Minimum qualification of diploma in Environmental Sciences, Public Health Promotion or any other related field.

 

 

Experience & Skills

  • Some prior knowledge of public health, communication or community development.
  • Demonstrate accountability to partners and disaster and conflict affected people and communities.
  • Ability to make autonomous decisions in a fluid environment.
  • Demonstrate understanding of when a decision can be taken and when to involve others.
  • Maintain focus on delivery of timely and appropriate results using available resources.
  • Leadership and leading teams in field,
  • Thinking out of box,

Good thinking and listening skills.
