At the forefront of new product development, the R&D Technician will be front and centre, making an impact on our brand, while continuing to learn and develop with our growing company.As an integral member of the team, you will be responsible for innovation and many of the creative outcomes. It is best suited to someone who thinks outside of the box, likes to have fun and work with people, along with a love for all things chocolate.What you will do

• Testing chocolates and confectionery recipes for scale-up capability; transforming them into tasting samples, utilizing pilot-sized mixers, refiners, conches, and tempering machines.
• Producing prototype chocolates in different formats (slabs, ribbons, chunks, chips, squares, molds) by hand or by machine.
• Analyzing & testing confection samples and ingredients using test kitchen lab equipment (viscometer, refractometer, pH meter, moisture analyzer, micrometer, colorimeter, temper meter).
• Collaborating & communicating test results to Management on new formulations and projects.
• Organizing, calibrating, maintaining, cleaning, and arranging for the maintenance of the test kitchen, processing, and lab equipment.
• Maintaining & replenishing the inventory of raw materials and consumables.
• Providing recommendations for optimizing recipes to achieve operational efficiencies.
• Maintaining equipment manuals, SOP’s, and MSDS files for lab equipment.
• Working with the Sensory Team on tasting ingredients and samples, for quality and product matching.
• Undertaking administrative and computer related tasks (ex. creating and updating project logs, market research, product development, document control, calibration logs, shelf-life studies, pilot lab maintenance files).
• Balancing a 75/25 ratio between “hands on” lab work and administrative work, respectively.

What we expect from you

• Bachelor of Food Science degree (preferred) or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in the industrial food manufacturing environment.
• Minimum 3 years of experience with Operations in the food manufacturing industry.
• Minimum 2 years of demonstrated practical experience within a test kitchen or pilot plant.
• Experience working in a R&D or Quality lab environment.
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to run and troubleshoot industrial food manufacturing equipment and smaller scale pilot lab equipment.
• Physically capable of lifting

50 lbs. regularly; manually handle (load/unload) materials in both easy and awkward positions. * Experience in and knowledge of chocolate making and processing (an asset).

• Enthusiastic, self-starting, reliable, and takes initiatives, working with a sense of urgency. Can work independently or in a team environment.
• Strong time management skills and able to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities.
• Exceptional attention to detail, record keeping, cleanliness, and organization.
• An attitude of curiosity, creativity, and focus on continuous learning.
• A proven ability to communicate in English, both written and verbally, to varied audiences. A solid understanding of presentations, meetings, documents, instructions, delivered in English.
• Ability to commute and work onsite (Richmond), 5 days a week, during dayshift. Flexibility with occasionally travelling to other company facilities (Richmond, Chilliwack) and offsite meetings. Flexibility with occasionally working overtime and/or changing work hours to accommodate project deadlines and Production runs.
