BirdLife International is the world’s largest and oldest nature conservation partnership.
Through our unique local-to-global approach, we deliver high impact and long-term conservation
for the benefit of nature and people.
Our Forests Programme leverages the power of Partnership to end deforestation and advance
restoration in the world’s most important tropical forest landscapes.
Carbon finance is an important mechanism to help address the dual crises of climate change and
biodiversity loss. Many sites where BirdLife Partners are working to address deforestation have
high potential to use carbon finance to generate local and national economic benefits, advance
biodiversity conservation, and combat climate change.
We are looking for an experienced and dynamic conservation project manager to support BirdLife
Partners in their development of REDD+ projects.
The role will have an initial focus in Tsitongambarika Forest, Madagascar, where the BirdLife
Partner, Asity Madagascar, has been implementing biodiversity and forest conservation for 18
years. In Tsitongambarika, the role offers a unique and exciting opportunity to establish a new
REDD+ project in collaboration with an experienced national NGO, the Government of Madagascar
and the community-led forest governance structure, with support from a committed corporate
partner. Through provision of multi-faceted support, the role will support the REDD+ project’s
development while also enabling Asity’s leadership in the project, on-the-ground conservation
actions, and organizational development. In Tsitongambarika, the role will work in close
collaboration with Asity Madagascar and BirdLife’s global and Africa regional teams, to
provide:
- Technical support and coordination of the design and development of the Tsitongambarika
Forest REDD+ project, - Readiness strengthening for Asity Madagascar as a growing national conservation NGO, and
- Management of ongoing BirdLife International grants that support forest conservation and
carbon project development at Tsitongambarika
The REDD+ Project Manager will also be part of BirdLife’s growing global Forests Programme,
with opportunities to input to and exchange experiences with colleagues and Partners working on
forest conservation, restoration and conservation finance around the world.
The ideal candidate has the experience and enthusiasm to take on this complex and ambitious
initiative. They should be able to demonstrate their ability to understand and adapt to an
evolving project context, including sensitively managing important stakeholder relationships
while advancing a technically complex REDD+ project design, development and certification
process.
The ideal candidate will have
- Knowledge of tropical forest landscape conservation issues, and related funding mechanisms
and trends - Demonstrable relevant work experience in climate finance, voluntary carbon markets, carbon
credit value chain or similar. - Expertise and understanding for developing REDD+ projects and carbon certification for VCS
and CCBS, including relevant monitoring and evaluation components - Experience working with and supporting national NGOs
- Strong technical, analytical and statistical skills
- Experience designing and building programmes of work through strategic planning and team
coordination. - Experience working with the private sector, including corporates and/or financial
institutions, on climate or forest-related issues. - Experience in project planning, design, negotiation, contracting and reporting.
- Experience of working in developing countries; experience in Madagascar an advantage
- Fluency in English, and working proficiency in spoken and written French essential, fluency
an advantage
