Research Assistant in Applied Mathematics for Economic Systems

The Centre for Mathematics of Precision Healthcare (CMPH) in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London is part of a multi-university collaboration funded by the Nuffield Foundation to examine the impacts of technological disruption on people and communities across the UK and to ascertain the future of working practices and job skills in the UK. 

This £1.8M project (The ‘Pissarides Review’) is a 3-year collaboration between the London School of Economics, the Institute for the Future of Work (IFOW), Imperial College London and Warwick Business School, supported by the Nuffield Foundation and in collaboration also with economists at UCL. Grounded in the Nobel Prize Winning research of Principal Investigator Professor Chris Pissarides on frictions, the project involves a cross-disciplinary approach to evaluating disruption and modelling competing futures for work. The overarching purpose of the project is to help build a future of better work for the UK with a focus on building capabilities, strengthening resilience and reducing inequalities through better work.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant on a full-time basis to join this multidisciplinary team to investigate how transformation in the world of work may impact on the health and wellbeing of workers across the UK. You will primarily work with Professor Mauricio Barahona and Dr Jonathan Clarke in the Centre for Mathematics of Precision Healthcare. You will also work as part of a wider team of mathematicians, economists, clinicians and public policy researchers appointed under this project and within the IFOW and CMPH.

Duties and responsibilities

As part of this project, you will:

• Contribute to analysis of the IFOW Disruption Index (DI), examining the relationships between the DI and health and wellbeing outcomes.
• Collaborate in the analysis of job advertisement data to explore the evolving skills requirements of regions of England.
• Compile and maintain a repository of relevant publicly available datasets in the fields of economics, social practices and public health.

You will contribute to independent and original research within the Group, submit publications to refereed journals and assist with the administration of the Research Group. You will be self-motivated and be able to work alongside and aid other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students.

Essential requirements

You will be a motivated MSc graduate in econometrics, applied mathematics, machine learning, data science, computational social sciences, econophysics or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience. Deep interest in cross-disciplinary applications and methodologies is a must. Experience in some of econometrics, time series analysis, machine learning, statistical analysis, network theory is desirable. Strong computational and coding abilities are essential.
