Salary:  £30,487 to £45,585 per annum (pro rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience (minimum £33966 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

The UK Institute for Technical Skills and Strategy is a brand-new national entity funded by Research England and a range of sector partners.  The new institute builds on the Gatsby funded Technician Commitment and the Research England funded TALENT programme, which have become the catalysts for advancing the landscape and culture for the technical community nationally. It will work in partnership with a network of organisations across UK higher education and research.

The Research Associate/Fellow will support the design and implementation of various threads of research activity including quantitative analysis of secondary data, new cases studies (e.g of organisational change, implementation and relevant sector initiatives) and formative evaluations of ITSS interventions. The role holder will contribute to the dissemination of the findings through open-access publications, conferences and other events, ensuring wide dissemination with a focus on universities, policy makers, research funders and relevant research communities. 

The role holder(s) will, as appropriate, support the culture change projects within the ITSS, collecting data and building understanding of aspects of the technical work force including: on EDI matters; on research culture; on technicians roles in knowledge transfer and collaboration; on technical representation within universities; on organisational change.

The successful candidate will have:

  • An appropriate research background in the social sciences or other relevant area and skills in qualitative data generation and/or descriptive quantitative analysis.
  • Experience of researching in complex social/education settings using a variety of applied social research methods
  • A PhD in a relevant field (completed or close to completion)

This position is offered on a fixed term contract until 31st July 2026 and is available immediately.  Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.
