The Department of History at the University of Nottingham is seeking a research fellow in modern Chinese history. The purpose of this role is to assist Professor Jeremy E. Taylor on his project “Documenting Wartime Collaboration: Scholarly Geopolitics and Transnational Re-assessments of the Wang Jingwei Regime” (funded by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation). This Project will consider how the rise of “Wang Jingwei Studies” – the subfield of modern Chinese history that focuses on the Wang Jingwei regime (which nominally ruled Japanese-occupied China from 1940 to 1945) – has been shaped by wider scholarly and geopolitical trends over the last decade or more.

The person appointed will have the opportunity to use their initiative and creativity to identify and collect relevant research materials for the Project; undertake data entry for an on-line Bibliography that is being developed through the Project; communicate with Project Partners in Taiwan, United States and elsewhere; and assist Professor Taylor in organising conference panels and other events.

The successful applicant must have a PhD (or close to completion) or equivalent in modern Chinese history; must be fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English; must have research knowledge of the field of modern Chinese history (especially 1930s and 1940s); must have excellent oral and written communication skills; and must have the ability to work well to deadlines and to manage administrative demands efficiently.

We warmly welcome applications from under-represented groups, regardless of gender, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, age, socio-economic background, disability, religious or political beliefs, trade union membership, family circumstances, sexual orientation or other irrelevant distinction. We have an Athena Swan Bronze Award recognising good practice towards the advancement of gender equality in our school.

Shortlisting is anonymous. We cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed. Shortlisting is by criteria-based questions based on the person specification, rather than CV or letter.

This is a fixed-term, part-time (1 day/7.25 hours per week) post commencing 1st November 2023 or as soon thereafter until 30th April 2026. Day of work per week can be flexible, but the candidate will be expected to attend scheduled online and in-person meetings and events with relevant parties in the Nottingham area.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Jeremy E. Taylor, email: [email protected]; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
