We are seeking one or two enthusiastic postdoctoral researchers for a project to develop a microwave parametric amplifier based on quantum paraelectricity. Superconducting parametric amplifiers are exquisitely sensitive and can resolve signals at the smallest levels allowed by quantum mechanics. However, an important limitation of existing technology is that it works only in very low magnetic fields, which rules out many applications.

We aim to develop a new type of microwave parametric amplifier which exploits the non-linear electrical permittivity of paraelectric crystals. In this implementation, the amplifier will be fabricated on the surface of a wafer made of quantum paraelectric material such as strontium titanate or potassium tantalate. We are seeking a researcher to design, fabricate, and characterise this device.

This paraelectric amplifier has possible applications ranging from quantum computing to microscopy. Within this project, the target application will be to develop an amplifier for the QSHS dark matter search, whose requirements in terms of quantum-limited sensitivity and robustness to magnetic field are precisely those addressed by this technology. The ultimate aim is to increase the experimental sensitivity by squeezing vacuum fluctuations that would otherwise obscure the signal from dark matter. This post therefore offers simultaneously the opportunity to develop ground-breaking quantum technology and to apply it to one of the greatest problems in physics: the search for dark matter.

Lancaster is a major player in superconducting quantum devices in the UK and benefits from extensive nanofabrication, cryogenic, and electronics infrastructure. The postholder will work in the Quantum Technology Centre at the Physics Department of Lancaster University, and will travel as necessary to liaise with project partners in London and Sheffield and to attend national and international workshops and conferences.

Funding is available to appoint to this post as soon as you are available. You will join us on an indefinite contract. However, the role remains contingent on external funding, which at this time runs for approximately 12 months.
