Research Programme ManagerContract: Full Time/Fixed TermThe at the Tyndall Institute is recognised as a global leader in developing, prototyping and scaling to manufacturing advanced photonic and electronic packaging processes. This includes developing novel optical coupling, laser and electronic integration technologies. Among its many activities, the group hosts the European Photonics Packaging Pilot Line (PIXAPP) and the European Photonics Innovation Academy which is part of PhotonHub Europe. The group collaborates with multiple academic and industry partners worldwide, leading many large-scale projects involving multiple research partnerships.To further grow and develop its research activities, the group invites applications for an exciting position as Research Programme Manager to manage all administrative, contractual and financial aspects of the group’s research projects. This includes managing both large-scale publicly funded and private industry-funded projects. The position will involve directly supporting researchers in the group with the preparation of new project proposals and managing funded and ongoing projects.Key Responsibilities

  • Managing all funded projects, overseeing the coordination and submission of financial and budgetary information and management of reporting to funding agencies (e.g. European Commission, Enterprise Ireland, etc)
  • Lead group researchers regarding Tyndall’s Financial Policy, Procedures and Systems in relation to expenditure on their grant-funded projects.
  • Champion group researchers in the preparation of competitive externally funded proposals, including liaising with funders, project partners and internal Finance and Legal Teams to prepare large-scale consortium proposals.
  • Encourage group researchers to prepare new industry project proposals and provide project management support for on-going industry funded projects.
  • Manage cash flow and projects spending to anticipate financial requirements through short term and long term or strategic planning in consultation with the Head of Group and Tyndall’s Finance Team.
  • Manage, in collaboration with Tyndall’s Finance Team, the preparation and submission of timely and accurate projects’ financial data as required by funders.
  • Manage the Group’s interaction with other internal Tyndall Departments (e.g. Human Resources, Legal, Procurement…)
  • Participate in education and public engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • Postgraduate qualification in project management.
  • Typically 5 years’ experience working within research finance.
  • Experience in championing the acquisition of large-scale EU-funded projects as consortium coordinator and partner.
  • Experience in managing financial and administrative aspects of EU-funded projects as consortium coordinator and partner.
  • Experience in providing direct mentoring to and support to research staff on financial and administrative matters.
  • Experience of developing and implementing contractual agreements ranging from industry to inter institutional agreements as they relate to finance, IP and overheads.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to enable interpretation of data and data extraction from multiple financial data sources.
  • Experience of developing and delivering new strategic initiatives such as training programmes.
  • Experience working in a technology environment, either research or industry.
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills to ensure representation of the Group with funding agencies, brokerage events and consortium meetings.
  • Proven ability to work independently, as part of a team, and to interact with internal and external stakeholders from a range of disciplines.

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of creative skills/creativity
  • Experience in working within a photonics, electronics and semiconductor technologies environment.
  • Experience in funding diversification, including national and non-EU funding agencies.
  • Strong IT skills and experience of appropriate financial management systems and funding agencies reporting requirements and management tools.
  • Experience supporting complex industry projects with demanding timelines.
  • Experience preparing project statements of work, negotiating contracts and project costing.
  • Experience of public procurement policies and processes.
  • Demonstrates and supports a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.
