Are you interested in the opportunity to join a dynamic Vascular team within one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe? We are looking for enthusiastic Vascular Surgeons to join as research fellows in our Vascular and Major Trauma Service. This particular post is at Specialty Registrar level ST3+ level and in addition to working toward a postgraduate research degree, will support the delivery of services including participation in 1:9 Vascular and Major Trauma Surgery acute rota.Main duties of the jobLeeds Vascular Institute (Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust) is a thriving busy vascular surgery department and in addition the Vascular Surgeons participate in the Major Trauma Centre team. The applicant should therefore hold ATLS or an equivalent qualification. If you do experience a delay in the shortlisting stage of the recruitment cycle, please bear with us while this process is completed, and contact the named contact if you have any questions.Job descriptionJob responsibilitiesDUTIES OF THE POSTThe post of Clinical Research Fellow in Vascular and Trauma Surgery is for 1 year, with a view to further extension by mutual agreement, allocated to the Leeds Vascular Institute. The post holder will be engaged in a vascular research project with a view to submitting the work for a higher degree (MSc/MD/PhD). Vascular surgery is embedded within internationally recognised research infrastructure at the University of Leeds including the Leeds NIHR BRC, NIHR Surgical MedTech MIC, RCS Clinical Trials Unit and BHF training centre. Currently, we have projects which encompass clinical vascular research as well as laboratory-based studies in a range of subjects including the cell biology of vascular disease, biomarkers of plaque stability, and vascular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. You will join a team of 1 ACL, 3 ACFs, 1 AFP and 2 trust research fellows. In addition to the research work, there are also clinical duties which include a day-case operating list and outpatient clinics. The post holder will also participate in the vascular and major trauma surgical StR acute out of hours rota.The successful candidate will be carefully supervised by Associate Professor D Russell, Mr T Wallace, Mr P Coughlin or Associate Professor M Bailey in all aspects of the clinical and laboratory research work, and in addition, have a senior (Professor or Associate Professor in the University of Leeds) non-clinical co-supervisor based throughout their project. There are regular research meetings at which the work in progress is carefully evaluated and this also serves as a problem-solving forum. The Trust Doctor is actively encouraged to present their work at local, national and international meetings and it is expected that the research work is submitted to peer-reviewed journals. Previous Vascular Research Fellow post holders have been successful in being awarded either an MD or PhD Degree by the University of Leeds and it is expected that the current incumbent would also submit his/her work for such a higher degree. The unit has an excellent track record of research fellows obtaining national training numbers in surgery, and most recently in the new separate vascular surgical speciality.In addition to the research aspects of the post, the post holder is also afforded the opportunity to improve their clinical experience in the form of elective day-case surgery, and seeing patients in the clinic and participating in the vascular surgical and major trauma acute out of hours rota.Clinical duties are inclusive but not exhaustive of the following:Pre-admissions clinicsWard managementOperating theatre and outpatientsEmergency assessment of vascular and resuscitative major trauma patientsDiabetic foot clinicsPost-operative intensive care reviewsDischarge lettersDiscussions with relativesLEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITYThis job description sets out the main duties and responsibilities of the posts.
