Offer Description

Missions
As part of the ARENAS Horizon Europe project (Analysis of and Responses to Extremist Narratives, https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101094731 ), lasting 48 months, the CNRS is recruiting a 2-year (24 months) post-doctoral researcher, intended to conduct an ethnographic inquiry in activist nationalist movements in France.
The candidate will conduct an ethnographic fieldwork in activist nationalist movements in France in order to understand the mechanisms of ideological radicalization.
The position is part of the workpackage 2 of the project ARENAS, whose objective is to characterize and detect extremist narratives. This workpackage includes: 1) collecting data and compiling corpora, 2) identifying and characterizing extremist narratives, 3) development of annotation schema and manual analysis of extremist narratives, 4) testing the algorithm with the annotated dataset to validate the annotation schema for automatic detection of extremist narratives. The position is part of a 5th task and is complementary to the previous ones: anchored in a qualitative approach, and in a critical approach of discourse, in linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics.

– Conduct an ethnographic inquiry in activist nationalist movements in France
– Participate in the writing of a scientific report on this subject
– Participate Workpackage 2 meetings, both in person and remotely
– Occasionally participate in other project meetings

Abstract of the project ARENAS – Social protest movements, the pandemic and the war in Ukraine are all events that have polarized debates and fostered extreme narratives, challenging Europe’s democratic exercise. In social media and through the connections between digital and traditional media, extremist narratives have fed on emotions. The EU-funded ARENAS project will focus on these narratives as crucial nexuses to provide concrete responses to their consequences. The project will measure and map the spread of extremist narratives, identify multi-level policy recommendations to help counter them, define remediation actions for individuals and groups affected, and deliver educational and institutional propositions to anticipate future challenges.
Supervision – The supervision of the recruited person will be carried out within the framework of the Laboratoire Parole et Langage (UMR 7309), in Aix-en-Provence, under the direction of Samuel Vernet, senior lecturer in Language Sciences. The Laboratoire Parole et Langage focuses on the study of language in its different contexts: cognitive, interactional, and social. This consideration of the social dimension is illustrated in particular by research on language contacts, sociolinguistic variation and discourse analysis. The person recruited will be able to join the team SystUS (Systèmes, Usages et Sociétés).
