Established in 2004, the Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) hardware and systems, specialising in both electronics and photonics – materials, devices, circuits, and systems. Over a period of 20 years, Tyndall’s Integrated Magnetics group has demonstrated World-beating results in the area of Integrated Magnetics for On-Silicon and PCB-embedded applications. The group has developed innovative solutions in all aspects of Power Magnetics research, including design, material & process development, micro-nano-fabrication, materials and electrical characterization, packaging, and reliability. The group’s research has had a very strong commercial impact with R&D partnerships, technology transfer and licensing with some of the world’s leading companies in magnetic components, silicon foundries, wafer-level assembly, SoC and electronics systems design.The Integrated Magnetics Group is part of Tyndall’s MicroNano Systems (MNS) Centre. The group is equally engaged in academic research and industry-sponsored contract research programmes. Consequently, the key objective of the group is to undertake cutting-edge research that will deliver high impact – by generating intellectual property (IP) such as patents, invention disclosures and licenses; by publishing journal articles, white papers, technological position papers and by making public presentations at flagship conferences around the world.Role descriptionThe successful candidate will shape the development of integrated magnetic devices suitable for emerging PSiP and PwrSoC platforms. The researcher will perform design and simulation activities for integrated inductor devices by using industry-standard FEM-based simulation tools such as ANSYS Maxwell-3D, HFSS. The researcher will also involve in designing and developing power converters operating in 10~100 MHz comprising of embedded inductors for futuristic SoC and IVR applications. The candidate is expected to contribute to the electrical characterization of integrated magnetic devices in Tyndall’s state-of-the-art large-signal electrical testing facility.This position offers excellent and timely career growth possibility.   • To deliver innovative technological solutions to various power electronics research questions within Integrated Magnetics research theme,
  • To participate in generating intellectual property, publishing in pre-eminent journals, and presenting the research outcome in tier-1 international conferences.
  • To be the technical lead of academic and/or industry-funded projects or work packages, and to ensure timely delivery of project goals.
  • To design and simulate advanced integrated magnetic devices and high-frequency power converters for SoC and IVR applications.
  • To test and electrically characterize new magnetic devices as both an individual and team contributor
  • To participate in education and public outreach engagement activities, as required.
  • To ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • To ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in Electrical, Electronics, or related discipline.
  • Thorough knowledge of electromagnetics, power electronic circuits and systems, high-frequency passive component models such as for inductors and capacitors.
  • Typically, 4-5 years’ experience with circuit and Finite Element simulation tools such as Maxwell-3D, HFSS, and SPICE.
  • Strong laboratory hardware testing experience with instruments such as oscilloscope, signal generators and spectrum or network analyzers.
  • Track record of publications in reputed journals, tier-1 international conferences etc.
  • Highly self-motivated and ability to take initiatives.
  • Good communication, writing, organization, and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of creative skills/creativity
  • Experience in switched-mode power converter design and testing.
  • Experience in PCB design.
