Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher – 5G Network System Level SimulationContract Type: Full Time/Fixed Term (24 months)The at Tyndall National Institute in Dublin is advertising for the position of a Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher in 5G network simulation modelling for the ANDES project. The project is a collaboration between academic (Tyndall, UCC) and industrial partners (Analog Devices).The successful candidate will develop a 5G system level simulator and carry out performance analysis of different cellular network deployments and evaluation of new wireless techniques and algorithms.The post offers a superb opportunity for an ambitious individual to work collaboratively between academia and industry and across teams in Ireland and the US.Tyndall’s Wireless Communications Laboratory intends to grow to 50+ researchers based in Dublin by 2025. As part of this, follow-up opportunities within the lab may be available after the successful completion of the ANDES project, subject to performance.Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a high-performance system-level 5G network simulator, including massive MIMO and small cell deployments, 3D radio channel modelling, and user traffic and mobility modelling.
  • Perform comprehensive simulation studies of different cellular network deployment scenarios.
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of new wireless techniques and algorithms.
  • Prepare and disseminate the findings through presentations and reports to internal and external stakeholders, contribution to white papers, and publications in leading journals and conferences.
  • Liaise with counterparts in Analog Devices to ensure that the project objectives and milestones are met in a timely manner. This will involve regular interactions through email, audio and video calls, and occasional travel for face-to-face meetings.
  • Manage the simulation software repository, and create documentation to allow researchers to access and use the simulator.
  • Participate in developing future research initiatives within the Tyndall research group.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may be reasonably required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in Wireless Communications, Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in developing cellular network system simulators, including 3D channel modelling, physical layer signal processing and multi-antenna techniques.
  • Very strong software programming skills, and able to independently learn to use new programming languages and software tools.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams from academia and industry.

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of creative skills/creativity
  • Highly skilled in mathematical modelling tools such as MATLAB, Julia and/or Python.
  • Experience in 5G NR and 3GPP channel models is highly desirable.
  • Experience in implementing radio ray-tracing calculations.
  • Familiarity with event-driven simulation.
