AstraZeneca’s Flu-BPD group is seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to join our multidisciplinary team specializing in Virology, Analytical Development, and Process Development. Based in Liverpool, you will play a crucial role in developing and delivering the seasonal live attenuated influenza vaccine by bringing scientific excellence and cutting-edge analytical expertise to our pipeline.In this dynamic and collaborative environment, you’ll lead projects that help advance influenza strain development, support commercial manufacture, and empower critical improvements in vaccine analytics. You’ll be well-supported as you apply your expertise to solve complex challenges, influence company strategy, and help shape the future of vaccine science.Accountabilities:As a Senior Scientist, you will be a key contributor in our multidisciplinary team, developing and validating cell-based assays to advance detection and understanding of influenza viruses. You will generate high-quality experimental data, optimize analytical methodologies, and support the transfer of robust techniques to commercial quality control, directly impacting vaccine development for patients worldwide.You will champion safe, ethical, and compliant laboratory practices while collaborating across diverse project teams and disciplines. Your expertise and creativity will help drive innovation and continuous process improvement. By sharing scientific knowledge, mentoring junior colleagues from a variety of backgrounds, and encouraging open dialogue, you will help build an environment where every perspective is respected and valued. Communicating progress transparently with stakeholders, you will feed shared goals, celebrate successes, and help shape a culture of inclusion and scientific excellence.Essential Skills and Experience:PhD in a relevant scientific field (or equivalent experience) with 4–10 years postdoctoral or industry experienceIn-depth hands-on experience developing and validating cell-based or virus-based assays, ideally with influenzaProven analytical development, method validation, and technology transfer experienceStrong background in cell culture, analytical biochemistry, laboratory automation, and microbiologyExcellent decision-making skills and ability to work independently under time pressureAdherence to GMP, regulatory, and documentation standardsDesirable Skills and Experience:Experience with liquid handlers and automated laboratory technologyProficiency with data analysis software (GraphPad Prism, JMP, SoftMax Pro)Experience implementing process improvement initiatives and supporting cross-functional projectsPrior exposure to Bioassay/CMC environmentsExperience supervising or mentoring junior scientistsWhy AstraZeneca?At AstraZeneca, we know our greatest strength comes from the diverse backgrounds and ideas our people bring.
