Job summary

This Storage and Backup Engineer is part of a team of engineers providing day-to-day

hands-on delivery and support of storage and backup technologies.

This role is responsible for operating in the role of ‘Subject Matter Expert’ on storage and backup technology, keeping up to date with industry trends and drawing upon industry wide experiences.

We have some exciting projects over the next 12-18 months that will include a refresh of our SAN switches and tape library renewal that support ICT’s mission to support world leading research.

You will be a member of the Data Centre Services team which will require you to occasionally attend our remote Data Centre facility, currently situated in Slough

Duties and responsibilities

  • To actively engage with the development and delivery of the Storage and Backup Infrastructure to College standards ensuring it supports the day-to-day operational necessities.
  • To have demonstrable knowledge of working with virtual server infrastructure, storage, and backup technologies
  • Working closely with key college wide stakeholders, project teams, external contractors and consultants ensuring services are deliverable in a sustainable way.
  • Continuously improve and develop our storage and backup environment in line with best practice.
  • Ensuring that new systems and solutions are documented and transitioned to service for normal business as usual activity.
  • To play a role in the Quality Assurance of the infrastructure in line with compliance and regulations.
  • Manages the full life-cycle operation of active storage and backup equipment, across campus and within Data Centres, including purchasing, installation, configuration, monitoring, issue resolution, decommissioning and disposal.

Essential requirements

Essential requirements

  • To have demonstrable knowledge and administration of EMC storage arrays
  • To have demonstrable knowledge and administration of Spectrum Scale
  • To have demonstrable knowledge and administration of CISCO MDS FC switches
  • Practical experience of deploying and administrating IBM Spectrum Protect
  • Practical experience of using AD/DFS/NTFS permission handling

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Knowledge and administration of Netapp storage arrays
  • Bash/Shell scripting experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of VMware ESXi
  • Knowledge and understanding of the concepts, technologies, and advantages of cloud computing.
  • Experience of working with DevOps principles in mind.
