Studying neural activity in Alcohol use disorder for devising new treatments
Department of Psychology
PhD Research Project Competition Funded UK Students
Application Deadline: 29 February 2024
Details
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a long-term condition with high relapse rates and a substantial socio-economic burden. Most individuals do not respond to conventional limited treatments, thus calling for innovative and personalised therapies to enhance treatment efficacy. The project will focus on identifying patterns of brain activity that underlie excessive drinking and devising non-invasive neuro-modulation techniques-based protocols to modulate them. The project will combine cutting-edge neuro-modulation techniques such as Transcranial Magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES) with EEG to measure and modulate brain activity and evaluate the effects on behaviour. The research from this project will help identify biomarkers concerning alcohol consumption and pave the way towards developing personalised mechanism-driven interventions for symptom management.
The Department of Psychology has state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure, such as non-invasive stimulation devices (TMS and TES) and neurophysiological equipment like EEG.
Start date of PhD is 1 October 2024. All applications are online
