The Department of History at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate in International History with specialist knowledge in post-war US foreign relations. You will have a PhD already awarded (or to be awarded by time of appointment) in relevant subject area or equivalent professions qualification, with teaching experience at undergraduate level on post-1945 international history and politics.

The role holder will convene and teach the level 2 module HIST2025 – Race, Rights and Propaganda: Race and Identity in the Cold War Era, 1945-1990. Additionally the role holder will take some level 1 seminar groups and be assigned personal tutees.

We want to continue to tackle the underrepresentation of marginalised groups in history – whether in staffing, curriculum, research, the public face of history or presence in the classroom. You will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference to issues of underrepresentation, through your experience, work, ethos, identity, or in some other way.

We believe in an inclusive working environment for all. We are welcoming, supportive and caring, conscious that diversity in our community is fundamental to our values and vital to our success. We are particularly keen to receive applications from people currently underrepresented in history, such as those of marginalised genders (e.g. women, non-binary, trans), people with disabling conditions, and people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds.

You will contribute to an exceptional education for undergraduates in history and the Department’s research profile and culture. You will be keen to pursue opportunities for impact, public engagement, and interdisciplinarity. And you will contribute to the administration of the Department – in particular, by championing and promoting Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives.

Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed. Shortlisting is by criteria-based questions based on the person specification, rather than CV or letter.

About the role:

  • Design and deliver modules in history, contributing lectures and seminars within the Department’s overall teaching programme.
  • Supervise and examine undergraduate students.
  • Support tutorial groups, developing their knowledge and learning skills.
  • Take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students, dealing with sensitive issues.
  • Be responsible for administrative duties.
  • Contribute to impact, public engagement, and interdisciplinarity.
  • Contribute positively and proactively to the Department’s teaching culture, especially considering issues of underrepresentation in history.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract commencing 8 January 2024 until 31 July 2024 for 18.13 hours per week.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Jeremy Taylor, Head of Department, email: [email protected]; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
