Applications are invited for this new project, funded by Pembrokeshire County Council SPF Fund,
to coordinate the delivery of a wide-ranging woodland wellbeing across Pembrokeshire, reaching
communities through wellbeing sessions, training courses and volunteering events. You will work
with project partners and create partnerships with individuals, communities and providers to
engage a diverse range of participants across the Local Authority.

Post Title: Woodland Management Project Officer
Salary: £27,084 (pro rata, 3 days a week)
Contract: Fixed Term until Dec 2024, continuation dependent on funding

Job Purpose:

The ‘Woodland Management Project Officer’ will be responsible for providing
expertise and delivery on woodland management, site improvements and biodiversity on sites in
NPT linked to achieving the outcomes and outputs within the Pembrokeshire SPF funded project.

The role will contribute to the design and delivery of practical activity sessions and training
courses, integrating woodland management and biodiversity issues in the sessions and courses.

Where there is scope within the funding, the role will look to support woodland hub sites for
the activities to take place as a legacy of the project.

Over-all Role and Responsibilities:

  • To deliver activity sessions and training courses on aspects of woodland management and
    biodiversity to a wide range of participant groups, as well as to staff and volunteers.
  • To support project officers and social forestry groups in Pembrokeshire on technical
    aspects of management planning for small woodlands as relevant to the Pembrokeshire SPF Funded
    project. This may potentially include silvicultural and environmental regulatory and policy
    standards.
  • To support the development of woodland hub sites for community activity, where funding
    allows.
  • To support the process of agreeing access to woodlands, implementing safe practices and
    monitoring environmental impact on sites used within the SPF Funded project.
  • To work to the specific outcomes and outputs of the SPF Funded project in NPT, monitoring
    progress against these.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the values and principles of the Small Woods Association.

Specific Tasks and Duties:

  • To deliver practical activity sessions in a woodland setting, to participants, staff and
    volunteers.
  • To support woodland management within social forestry through providing in-person on-site
    and digital information and advice in woodland management, including techniques, equipment and
    the development and use of woodlands.
  • To complete risk assessments, annual basic ecological surveys and work with and / or write
    woodland management plans, where required.
  • To work as part of the Pembrokeshire SPT Fund delivery team in the development of specific
    woodland site improvements for communities advising on best practise and sustainable woodland
    management.
  • To work with the Pembrokeshire SPT Fund delivery team to arrange woodland permissions.
  • To deliver training courses in a woodland setting to participants, staff and volunteers.
  • To work collaboratively with social forestry groups, woodland stakeholders and owners.
  • To represent the Coel Lleol / Small Woods Wales at events.
  • To support the UK-wide Small Woods team in developing social-forestry support mechanisms.
  • Undertake other similar duties as appropriate.
