Details
Working memory (WM) is the memory system that allows us to manipulate and update information from moment-to-moment. WM has been a core construct in cognitive ageing, in part due to the extensive literature indicating that WM ability is correlated with other higher-order cognition, such as intelligence and long-term memory, across the lifespan. The prospective student will work with Dr Vanessa Loaiza to design studies to investigate the processes and mechanisms that underlie WM, how these aspects of WM may change in older age, and/or the relationship between WM and other cognition, such as long-term memory. To investigate these questions, the PhD student will receive ample training to develop a variety of methodological and statistical techniques that are used across experimental psychology.
Thus, the ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:
- Fitting the minimum entry requirements of at least a 2:1 or equivalent undergraduate degree plus a Masters degree (or relevant experience) in psychology or a related discipline
- Prior research experience in psychology or a related discipline
- Strong knowledge and skills regarding research methods and statistics; applicants with some prior programming experience (e.g., R, MATLAB, JavaScript) will be particularly competitive
- Very good English language skills (written and oral)
- Enthusiasm for and genuine interest in memory research
- Interest in pursuing an academic career in memory research
What is offered:
- The studentship includes a 3.5-year stipend (currently £18,622 per year) and covers UK home-student university fees. Note that international students are welcome to apply but would need to provide evidence of additional external funding to cover the higher fee levels.
- Extensive, hands-on training on the latest theoretical and methodological advances in memory research from a friendly and supportive supervisor
- Funding to recruit participants for studies, as well as to attend academic research conferences and professional development courses
- A diverse and international department comprising many areas of expertise, with particular excellence in memory and cognition
- A vibrant PhD community in Psychology (currently around 60 PhD students)
- Excellent infrastructure and resources at The University of Sheffield, one of the world’s top universities
To apply, please submit the following via the online portal:
- CV
- Degree transcript (list of courses and marks achieved so far)
- Contact details for two academic references
- A cover letter (maximum 1000 words) explaining: (1) why you are interested in pursuing a PhD about working memory, (2) how and why you think that your prior experience makes you a strong candidate for this position, and (3) your ideal PhD experience, including working style, training goals, and specific topics that you would be most excited to investigate.
