Offer DescriptionThe Center for Language Evolution Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in an NCN-funded OPUS project titled: “Paths to Polysemy: Integrating Approaches to the Role of Polysemy in the Evolutionary Dynamics of Language.”This is a full-time research position focusing on the role of polysemy in language evolution. The candidate is expected to have a PhD in linguistics, cognitive science or a related field, with a specialisation in language evolution research, especially vocal learning and language evolution. The successful candidate will work on experimental and cross-cultural research, contributing to a deeper understanding of how polysemy influences language evolution.The goal of the project is to combine cognitive and experimental approaches, especially in the domain of experimental semiotics, to understand how polysemy plays a role in the cultural evolution of language. Specific RequirementsRequirements:

  • A PhD in Linguistics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or a related field, obtained no earlier than 7 years before the year of employment in the project.
  • Research experience in language evolution, especially in the domain of vocal learning and language evolution.
  • Familiarity in experimental design and experience in running behavioral and linguistic experiments.
  • Proven track record of conducting cross-cultural research, particularly with Mandarin Chinese-speaking participants and stimuli.
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written.
  • Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese.

Experience in preparing scientific reports and journal articles.Description of tasks: * The postdoc will participate in designing, preparing and running experiments on the evolution of polysemy and semantic extension using artificial language learning, iterated learning and experimental semiotics

  • The postdoc will especially focus on cross-cultural comparisons between English-speaking, Polish-speaking and Mandarin Chinese-speaking participants
  • Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences.
