2 posts for a Full-time/Maximum part-time post for permanent Consultant Microbiologist. Applicants with dual accreditation in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases are also welcome to apply, where there will be further opportunities to expand clinical services if required. Applications are also welcome for fully accredited Clinical Scientists.The posts are full time with a 10 PA allocation and A rating (8%) for Out of Hours work but consideration would be given for either part time or job share.Areas of special responsibility i.e. Antimicrobial Stewardship Lead, MAAT/OPAT Microbiology Lead, Infection Prevention Control Doctor and Laboratory Lead / Head of Department will be agreed between the consultants. A rotation of these roles could be made every 3-5 years on a mutual basis.Clinical and management responsibility is via the Clinical Service Lead for Lab Medicine/Pathology and then to the Associate Medical Director for Cancer and Clinical Support Services.Main duties of the jobClinical Service

  • To liaise with clinicians, hospital staff, medical microbiologists, general practitioners and consultants in Communicable Disease, concerning the diagnosis and management of patients, control and prevention of infections, including the provision of telephone advice
  • Participate inward rounds for ICU, Emergency Assessment Units, Acute Medical Units and other wards as needed. Weekly ward rounds with Haematology/Oncology, Trauma & Orthopaedics teams as well as C. difficile ward round alongside IPC
  • Weekly Virtual ward rounds for the MAAT/OPAT Service with the Medical Admission Avoidance Team.
  • Participating in an ongoing medical audit programme within the department and participating in multidisciplinary clinical audit.
  • Preparing, implementing and reviewing guidelines and Apps for the management of infection, with particular emphasis on those relating to antimicrobial prescribing when assuming lead role.
  • Complying with agreed TSDFT management guidelines.

Responsibilities along with senior laboratory staff:

  • Responsibility for quality assurance performance within the department including taking part in all relevant national external quality assurance (NEQAS) programmes.
  • Responsibility and maintaining full UKAS accreditation with requirements for Quality & Competence ISO 15189:2012.

Person SpecificationQualifications and TrainingEssential

  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • If an applicant is UK trained, they must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
  • Primary Medical Qualification (MB CHB or equivalent).
  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification.

Desirable

  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent qualification
  • Higher Degree e.g. MSc or PhD
  • Evidence of additional qualification relevant to microbiology, virology and infection, prevention & control.

Knowledge and ExperienceEssential

  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in clinical microbiology and infection control.
  • Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice

Desirable

  • Experience in clinical virology and molecular diagnostic virology/ bacteriology
  • OPAT experience
