The Post

Stirling Law School wishes to appoint two suitably qualified Teaching and Research (T&R) Lecturers, one in Scots Private Law and the other in Scots Public Law. A knowledge of the relevant area of Scots Law is essential for these posts and a Scots Law LLB or a professional qualification in Scots Law is very desirable. One of the posts has a Scots Private Law focus (with a need to teach on the Scots Law of Obligations in the first year courses of Contract and Delict) whereas the other post has a Scots Public Law focus (with a need to teach the first year course on Scots Public Law and Scottish Legal System). Both post holders will have to deliver core LLB courses that must meet the requirements of the Law Society of Scotland. The appointees would be expected to contribute to a successful submission to REF 2029 and be an active part of one or more of the School’s research clusters (Environmental Law and Climate Justice, Human Rights Law, Private International Law and Arbitration, and Scots Law).

The main responsibilities are to teach and supervise undergraduate students, produce high quality research outputs, and to undertake administrative duties as appropriate to the grade of appointment.

Initially, the successful applicants will be responsible for:

(a) coordinating and delivering core and specialist modules in the LLB/BA (Hons) programmes;

(b) contributing to dissertation supervision and assessment in the LLB/BA (Hons) Law programmes.

  • Engage in individual and collaborative research, which aligns to the strategic direction of the University, develop a programme of research and disseminate results through high-quality publications in journals and books
  • Identify appropriate sources of funding, prepare research proposals for funding bodies and manage grants awarded
  • Supervise research students as required, providing direction, support and guidance
  • Design and deliver a range of teaching and learning, supervision and assessment activities including online/digital programmes where required
  • Participate in the School of Law’s, and where appropriate the Faculty’s, international engagement activities as required e.g. delivering teaching, contributing to joint programmes and recruitment of students
  • Participate in, and develop, networks and collaborations both internally and externally to the School of Law/Division/Faculty/University
  • Participate in the administrative processes of the School of Law, and where appropriate the wider University, including committee membership, quality assurance procedures and recruitment and admission of students
  • Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post

  • Contribute to curriculum review and enhancement, in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning
  • Participate in the School of Law’s, and where appropriate the Faculty’s, international engagement activities as required e.g. delivering teaching, contributing to joint programmes and recruitment of students
  • Participate in, and develop, networks and collaborations both internally and externally to the School of Law/Division/Faculty/University

  • Credible plans for the active pursuit of external research funding

  • Evidence of the ability to deliver excellent teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level
  • Knowledge of the relevant area of Scots Law

  • A record of involvement in applications for external funding for research and/or knowledge transfer
  • Experience of supervising dissertation projects across the range of undergraduate and/or postgraduate degrees
  • Experience of providing high-quality teaching across a range of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level preferably including online/digital programmes
  • Experience of designing and delivering course modules
  • Evidence of successful co-ordination, support, supervision, management and/or mentoring of others
  • Knowledge of the relevant area of Scots Law
