Job description

Offer DescriptionThe Centre national de la recherche scientifique is one of the world’s leading research institutions. To meet the major challenges of today and tomorrow, its scientists explore life, matter, the Universe and the workings of human society. Internationally recognized for the excellence of its scientific work, the CNRS is a benchmark in the world of research and development, as well as for the general public.
The thesis will be carried out within ISTerre laboratory in the Geodynamo team, composed of 15 people.
ISTerre is a Joint Research Unit of Grenoble Alpes University, CNRS, USMB, IRD and Gustave Eiffel University, located 1381 rue de la Piscine 38400 Saint-Martin d’Hères and on the Bourget du Lac Science Campus.
It is part of the Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers de Grenoble (OSUG) and the PAGE research cluster of the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA). It employs around 300 people and has an average annual budget of €7 million.
It is organized around 9 research and service teams, with the scientific objective of studying the physics and chemistry of planet Earth, with a particular focus on coupling observations of natural objects with experimentation and modeling of the associated complex processes. ISTerre also carries out solid Earth observation missions, and hosts and maintains national fleets of geophysical instruments, as well as a data center.
The doctoral school will be STEP: Earth, environmental and planetary sciences.Relying on geophysical observations, it is possible to constrain the current dissipations in the liquid cores of the Earth and the Moon. But these measured dissipations, expected to be dominant near the fluid core boundaries, are in disagreement with the latest dynamical mod-els. These two puzzling measurements can be attributed to the limitations of our models: we know little about the boundary stresses generated by a turbulent rotating flow in presence of buoyancy and topographic effects. Beyond planetary cores, such models are relevant for oceanic and atmospheric flows, where these effects modifies the stress on the ground floor.
the ERC THEIA group have designed an experimental setup, where a large tank is rapidly rotating and filled with salty water of variable density (creating a density profile). This setup will be built before the start of the PhD, and will provide a solid basis for a planned larger scale experiment of ~2.4m diameter (which will be built later, during the associated PhD thesis 2024-2027). The student will perform dedicated laboratory experiment, comple-mented with numerical and theoretical models, to investigate topographic and buoyancy effects.
This research topic is directly related with the general topic “topographic coupling” investi-gated within the group Geodynamo. The student, with skills in fluid mechanics and/or geo-physics, will thus naturally collaborate with other members of the team, e.g. on theoretical aspects with R. Monville, Dr D. Jault or Dr J.
