Job description
We have an exciting position for a research assistant to work on several projects that highlight the involvement of people with lived experience and to support the BRC advisory groups. Projects require both qualitative and quantitative skills and are varied. For example, ongoing projects include, how service users can influence projects, the effects of digital therapies and how data are shared. The postholder will also support service users research advisory groups within the Patient and Carer Involvement Theme of the Biomedical Research Centre (maudsleybrc.nihr.ac.uk). The work is varied and will require some flexibility in time allocation and in type of research. Individuals with first-hand experience of using mental health services are encouraged to apply.
This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 12 months.
This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent.
Key responsibilities
- To conduct research within the BRC remit and help with ongoing research projects in the BRC PPIE theme
- To help facilitate (and develop) Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research within the BRC and across the IoPPN.
- To help coordinate PPI groups for researchers (for example, the FAST-R service and the YPMHAG).
- To extend methods developed within the Service User Research Enterprise (SURE) to develop service-user generated outcome measures.
- Work independently, manage your workload and meet deadlines.
- Undertake administrative duties as required.
- To engage mental health service users in research.
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria
1. First degree in psychology or social sciences
2. Knowledge of quantitative data collection and analysis methods
3. Knowledge of qualitative data collection and analysis methods
4. Experience of working as part of a team
5. Experience of working with people who have used mental health services
6. Excellent communication skills
7. Ability to engage others
8. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the research
9. An interest in mental health
Desirable criteria
1. Post graduate qualification
2. Personal experience of using mental health services
3. Experience of developing and delivering Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) activities/events (in a research context)
