The School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast, is currently seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of Research Fellow.

The successful candidate will contribute to the research of the EPSRC funded project and to investigate the manufacturing and characterisation of 4D-printable nanocomposite materials for artificial muscles. This project aims to develop a new class of stimuli responsive electro-actuators through additive manufacturing of polymers and polymer nanocomposites. A key aspect of the project is the ability to manufacture 4D-printed layered architectures, capable of responding to their external stimuli (e.g., electrical, pressure), via additive manufacturing which will maximise efficiency, control, and strength of the resulting artificial muscles.

The post is a critical role, and as such, successful applicants will have responsibilities in independent research, supervision, planning, day to day lab management, collaborations, and outreach.

The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet the following criteria:

  • Have, or be about to obtain, a relevant PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline.
  • BSc (Hons): at least 2:1 or equivalent in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline.
  • Research experience in manufacturing of polymer composites and nanocomposites, functionalisation of nanofillers, additive manufacturing.
  • Experience in the characterisation of functionalised nanofillers and polymer nanocomposites and composites.

Please note the above are not an exhaustive list. For further information about the role including the essential and desirable criteria, click on the ‘Candidate Information’ link below.

This post is fixed term for 3 years. Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
